10 Reasons To Have A Destination Wedding
Planning the wedding has been a whirlwind of activity (even though the wedding is still, like, six months away) and my fiancé and I are still at logger heads as to where to hold the actual wedding ceremony. Though I have been pitching this destination idea for all I am worth, he isn’t quite sold on the idea of a destination wedding just yet. So, I decided to hit him with a 10-point list as to why we deserve this destination wedding, and if your future husband is as analytical as mine, you will need this list too.
A Destination Wedding Is…
Not the same as an elopement. A destination wedding is basically your wedding in a locale miles away from home. It can be anywhere you want, from the lovely castles in Britain, to the beaches in the Cayman Islands, to your great-aunt’s sheep ranch miles away from civilization. As long as it isn’t at home, around home, or within the community, or even the state, it is a destination wedding.
One: The wedding can be small
Only the people that need to be there will be there. No obligatory invitees. No uncountable numbers of children running around without supervision. I even laid my hands on some statistics: average number of guest at a wedding – over 500; average number of guests at a destination wedding – less than 50. I’ll let this simmer for a bit.
Two: More days of fun!
A typical destination wedding requires people to travel to the venue days before the ceremony. This will give us, and them, time to bond with each other, do fun stuff together, and even let the men throw a stag night! (under supervision, of course).
Three: Two Honeymoons!
If we go to the Cayman Islands (wink) for this wedding, there will be no need to search for another destination for a honeymoon. This wedding will literally be a honeymoon before the honeymoon!
Four: It is non-traditional. All the way
From the foreign venue to the non-alcoholic wine to my Grecian-style dress and flat silver sandals, nothing about this wedding is traditional, or has to be. We’ll be doing something different, something new, something special, for us.
Five: Save on the décor
With the exception of your great-aunt’s ranch, most wedding destinations take care of the décor (unless your aunt has been running a wedding service you know nothing about…)
Seven: It is less stressful
Also excluding great-aunt’s ranch (unless she has teams of ranch hands on board), many wedding destinations are already prepped for wedding ceremonies and guests: just call and make the arrangements, and they will handle the rest.
Eight: An out-of-town wedding
Need I say more?
Nine: Zero family drama
Our parents won’t agree on a venue unless we agree on one for them. Choosing a location far different from any they have in mind would nip the inevitable wedding-venue-battle in the bud.
Ten: We (I) call the shots
Let’s face it, I am more excited and invested in the wedding proceedings than he is, but still, with this out-of-town wedding, we are getting what we want, how we want it.
